The main place I have saw them spawning is close to the first island up the ostanaula. They have to drift 36 to 72 hours. I figure the river that time of the year is moving around two miles per hour. I need to map it out to see where they would need to spawn.

Freelined gizzard shad around current with blow downs . Throw shad out and chum to see where they are hiding. Sometimes they will only hit with light line. What kind of water temps are you finding in your creeks.

Re: Ever catch too many big shad..

That's s load there. I have a real good spot to get bait. I have done that before but they are normally a little smaller. When I see them on top flipping I have started throwing the net where the edge barely touches the school. If I throw over the whole school I end up with what you have there.

Re: Preserving Skipjack

Since they are so active and seem to always be feeding I don't think they will ever survive in captivity for extended periods. Unless they were able to feed in the tank like in the wild.

Re: Preserving Skipjack

I googled metabolic rate on skipjack and a lot pops up. This is interesting, there us a lot more yo read about also. It does not tell how to keep them alive but I found it al interesting. Last year I noticed our skipjack lived good that we caught and put on the hook. And put back in the tank and too...

It will make them bigger. The herring stay deep in the summer close to the striper and gizzards do not.

Re: Etowah

Yep west point generates every day. And they let out more CFS than what is going in not counting generation. I bet it's dropping like a rock. And for some reason they never generate from Morgan falls anymore.

Re: Etowah

The stretch of river I was in was 68.1 at 3:00 with no generation. They should be fine to catch and release I would think. The hooch on the other hand is up to 80 degrees where I liked to fish. The corps is really stressing the hooch striper fishery.

Re: Etowah

I think it's the drought along with the water wars. There are not any in the Ooustanaula. The water is to hot in the hooch now from no generation. The etowah where dirk fishes doesn't seem to have any more big fish since the drought. Our local striper fishing has gotten really bad. Cy's clients on g...
