Striper Soup Outfitters

Post by Shawn McNew » October 27th, 2015, 8:07 am

Just putting out a feeler here, would anybody buy bait if we set up a store in E TN somewhere near Lenoir City and called it STRIPER SOUP OUTFITTERS?

Do you think it would generate enough revenue after people have had to be self reliant to catch bait for so long you would be mainly generating business through out of town fishermen?

**That is just a question I do not know anything about the bait trade in TN or if there are other bait shops around.

Being an out of towner who struggles with time to find/catch bait and fish I dont think I would drive that far from my fishing grounds to buy bait....But I think if you could supply local bait shops with quality bait nearer cherokee or Norris that might work to some degree.

I will be glad to send people in your direction. If the bait is as first class that I'm sure it is, I WOULD PRUCHASE to keep from the expense & time when guiding, if close enough, although I am good at catching my own bait. A strategic schedule & location seasonally for weekend delivery could eventually create demand & need worth consideration. I do think it would take a couple of years to see a black bottom line on your investment.

My sentiments are much like the above. Locally, we have no live shad available on the Yadkin chain. My diehard friends and I have discussed it many times and feel that a premiere location would make or break it, since everyone had to be self reliant up to this point and the need isn't really there. Locations very close to busy ramps would be everything initially. After the demand becomes sustainable and customer base has been developed, locations out of the way would even be sustainable. On the water bait boats, like those off Biscayne bay would kill it IMHO.

I enjoy catching my own bait, but in the summertime when my kids are out of school and want to fish with me their patience is normally about up when i'm done catching bait. Then it would be nice to just buy some and go fish. Given the convenience and quality of bait, i'm sure it could turn into a beneficial venture. I know your not a huge fan of em, but if you could keep alewives in the summertime I think you could sell the heck out of em.

I like catching my own bait and keeping it at home. But, considering I haven't been born into wealth, and have to work for a living and keep up my farm, I really like the convenience of being able to buy bait, especially for short trips. Whenever I go to TN I would certainly be a customer.

Now, if you consider opening something up close to the GA/SC line, then I would be all over it, and know of others who would be patrons.. All of the local bait shops on Hartwell, Russell and upper half of Clarks Hill are almost exclusively herring operations. The Bait Shop (now known as the Hartwell Outdoor Center) is a first class operation. They almost always have trout, but shad are only carried in the late fall and early winter. The rest of the year you better catch your own if you want shad.

Honesty, I'd pay $200 for that! You could blow that much on a nights stay without too much effort, and, of course, good luck finding a Motel 6/Holiday Inn Express/whatever that will supply your shad at the same time. :hellyea:

We are going to have a booth at the expo this year in Knoxville! Going to be a hell of a time meeting and talking to a whole bunch of folks. I'll be demoing the BA tank all weekend to anybody who's interested. I fully expect to get the flu, bronchitis, hep C, herpes, and probably laryngitis being in contact with so many people in January.

Unfortunately, we had a setback with the floods. Water decided to come into the building and ruin about 4K worth of new flooring and some of the slat board that was laying on the floor. We are going to be grading and digging ditches next week so we can divert the water and get some new flooring in without fear of it flooding again.

Huge effort and result, congrats!
That slatwall is some expensive shit and you got the good stuff!
Just curious, did you decide against the membrane with floating floor or switch to glue down?

Only the best for the Soup!

The floor is wood grain vinyl that locks together, no glue needed. Should hold up good over time.

The water issue was not from the roof. However there was a small flat built up roof on the rear that was leaking. Patched once then patched it again and still leaked. So gave it a permanent fix. Had some of my guys stick build the trusses and tied them into the existing sloped roof line yesterday and put a metal roof on it today. The water issue was a mix of a low spot in the ground be hind the building, a missing down spout, and very heavy rain.

Can't be there on the 1st - if was the 6th (or 30th) then maybe - y'all should seriously do a big Grand Opening deal - catered by your new store manager, a free pet shad to everyone that comes by..... get the radio station out there, etc.....

I'll be by soon enough if I can't make the Grand Opening shindig

Looking good. Good luck and need to open it this weekend with the weather being so nice. By the way, make sure we have some bait in Acworth this weekend. I will get up there this spring and check it out.

Isn't selling nets kind of counterproductive to selling shad :shifty:

Looking good. Wish you'd open up shop on lake Cumberland. The older I get the harder it gets getting my ass up way before the crack of dawn to make bait! Same for a lot of guys. Alewive lakes suck for that reason. You'd do real well here.

Yeah, let's open the best fishing shop in east TN and not carry cast nets. :huhh: :huhh: :huhh: Just because you can buy a net doesn't mean you can throw it. Just because you can throw it doesn't mean you can find something to throw it on. Just because you can find something to throw it on doesn't mean you can catch it. Just because you can catch it doesn't mean you can transport it. Just because you can transport it doesn't mean you can store it. Just because you can store it doesn't mean you can sell it. Just because you can buy it doesn't mean you can catch a fish on it. Jus sayin.

We are OFFICIALLY OPEN!! Come on by today or this weekend and check out the store! We have a somewhat limited inventory compared to what we will have, but it's pretty good already. Same hours as Acworth store. 7am-6pm!

Those tanks  Hope to make it out there one day. No excuse for not trailering the boat that far when I don't have to worry about catching bait.

:salute: Beautiful setup at the store, & WOW what a location! Should help a lot of striper fishermen in the area with great striper supplies & great bait. I had the same feeling as a wealthy want to be looking a gold, while viewing the pretty gizzards swim around in the tank. It is going to be nice to pick up bait and water then go fishing the first hours of the day. I also saw a lot of experience hanging out at the shop so some good advice may be available.

We're getting orders in and will have a pretty good stuck of stuff within a couple of weeks if everything works out right. The display cases came in today and they look awesome.

I'm really happy about our water situation. It looks like the tap water is going to hold bait great. Good old Clinch River water. Had one guy come by and tell us you can't keep shad alive in Tennessee and that it's not like it is down in Ga. I wish someone would have told me this before I went to all this trouble! :cool2: :chef:
