Christmas Eve Eve

Post by Jim Burch » December 27th, 2017, 11:25 am

Weather: Cool and blustery, falling barometer Air temps: 34 at start, 52 at lines in
Wind: Southwest from 7 to 10 with some nasty gust to 15
Water: Stained with a little chop Water temps: 45 to 49
Times fished: 0700 to 1330
Presentation: Downlines and planers with split shot
Bait: storebought shiners

Solo trip. Weatherman was calling for a beautiful day and the almanac gave it a "Best" rating so I decided to give it a try. I had a few Bobcat's minnows left over and my son brought me some bass minnows from the lake where he works (Oak Hollow in High Point, NC).
Plan of the day was to hit the secondary creeks and let the birds tell me where the stripers were hanging. Like the beer commercial says, " it doesn't get any better than this"!

Found a nice cove with some birds in the air and feathers on the water. Always a good sign:

Not so happy with the bait size but it's what I had:

The screens looked good too so I dropped them down:

Not long before the downline set at 22 takes a bow. Solo, so only action shot I got:

Ended up being a keep by an inch and a half:

Poor picture quality but ended up being about 7 pounds:

Unfortunately that was it for the day other than perch and LMB. Stayed in the same general area. Tried deep, tried shallow, I hit the banks hard with the planers-no love. I saw a few more fish on the sounder but they seemed to be staying deep under the bait:

I guess I hit the tail end of the morning feed. A good day overall. This spot has some sentimental value for me. As I stated earlier, I lost my dad back in October after a long illness. This was an area my dad used to bank fish and it was a good day to have a little solitude and remember all the time we spent together. I sure miss him..
Tight lines and screaming drags to all!

Good going and thanks for the report.

I was thinking about what I'm going to do with my dad when he passes. Take him fishing one more time and turn him loose I reckon.
