5/14/2016 Dan River

Post by Rocky Dix » May 19th, 2016, 6:21 am

Time: 6a-3p
Temps: Air - 6a: Nipple-y 44
11a - 55-65
Water - 61 and cooled off to 58 around 2pm(eve of spring thunderstorm!)
Conditions: HEAVY fog opening to clear skies and bright sunshine rest of the day
Wind- 5-8mph in am
15-25mph from 11:30 -3
Water clarity : stained to begin, around midday turned ORANGE!( due to rain up river and creating unfavorable currents and
debris!
Tactics - Downlines w/ 2oz no-rolls
Planers ran out to the bank side to cover a little extra water(to much current to run middle)
Bait - 7-8" gizzard
3-4 threadfin
Cut bream
Artificial with buck tails and Swim baits
I had hit the river a few weeks back to try to catch some spring running striper coming up from Kerr. The constant rains and torrential downpours that have plaqued us the last few months has really made it difficult. That was not a busted trip and had fun. With my $2000 Minn Kota ULTERRA still in the damn shop for the 5th week(for who the hell knows why!! :rmad:  :rmad: ); I decided i would scratch the itch with another trip to the Dan, this time up towards the dam. This time I was going to make a pre-trip bait busting excursion. This being new to me I did not have great hopes but needed to practice on the net w/ a "dry, no mouth techique" :chef: cudos for that chef. I loaded Thursday after work and running out of daylight and ran out to a local lake. Tried my hand at finding some bait on the electronics and failed :geyes: So I stopped at a couple bridge colums and chunked out the net. Low and behold I had bait!!! BIG AND BEAUTIFUL!

With high hopes of bent rods and rockfish beating the side of the boat to get in I headed to the river at 5:30am. The water was un-navigable due to extreme fog and floodgate conditions.... I idled up river about 2 miles and finally set up shop...The morning was opening up to be a very nice day , with high winds and a storm around dinner time. 1 planer ran out with big gizzard on , 2 nd rod down off back of the boat on DL, baiting 3rd DL and WHAM!!!!!!!! 8 minutes in and rod bent! Get in 8# blue cat.

Rebait line, finish rods 3,4,5,6. 15 minutes later and I notice a little "fishy" activity on a DL....and FISH ON! Get in 7lb, 25" rockfish. :hellyea: :hellyea: At this point my mission was complete! I caught my own bait and again found running striper in a 35 mile river!
This however, was the only freaking striper that was caught all day! So we moved within about 6 miles of the river trying a few feeder creeks and current breaks but no good. I did however catch the hell out of blues! We ended the day with 9 catfish totaling 64lbs. So the trip was a huge success overall. I did chunk a bucktail and swimbait at every eddy, and water break and fishy looking obstacle I could find but I think the water conditions made artificial non-existent :wah:

This will be my last river trip this year but I was able to practice a bunch of new techniques and look for different spots than I would before thanks to a few members advise. Brought back some good eats as well! Thanks again fellas!
Now if I can get this whole lake thing figured out!?!?! :joker:

Nice report Rocky, I should be gearing up to hit Kerr in the next few weeks. I know plenty of fish already being caught on the main lake.

That's awesome man, you are well on your way to becoming addicted. Finding bait, transporting it, and then having success is a GOOOOOOD feeling :tupl:
