Fishing shad in trout waters? Trip to The Clinch (Norris)

Post by Mickey Nightrain » September 13th, 2016, 1:49 pm

Ok so the wife and I are taking a trip this Sunday and we're finally going to do the whole clinch river thing, but with a large kayak were going to go bellow Norris. We are going for a trophy and my question is... Knowing striper eat all trout in those waters, why not fish a large shad? Would a trophy striper not want a big fat shad that just came out of nowhere or would they see it as a less appetizing meal. We have 7 hours to do this and we don't want to be wasting time. Also is there a good launch ramp anyone recommends that would be near good areas? Weve heard the RT61 access ramp and Peach Orchard access ramps are good.

Blessings

It is difficult to keep a gizzard shad in good condition in water that cold but they will catch some. Take some trout catching stuff & just put them on the hook to offer also.
If you can put in at Peach orchard and go downstream to #61 bridge. leave your vehicle at #61 There is little to no flow most days right now as Norris is to the bottom of the normal operating range for the season. Information for flow is available from TVA.

Yeah after a lot of back and forth I suggested to the wife that we go to The Cumberland near Carthage and run up the Caney Fork a bit. Going to be bringing some live 10-12" trout so hopefully I'll have a great report to write up!
