Aluminum Boat Rod Holder Mounts

Post by Charles Parker » October 4th, 2016, 12:06 pm

This may have been covered in previous tips but I figured I would share anyways. On my Lowe Roughneck it is not fitted with the accessory track on the gunwale/side of the boat. And as you all may know thin aluminum can be tricky to get screws to bite into. I utilized "riv nuts" to fasten my rod holders and they have held up well. It does take a little research to make sure you have the appropriate "riv nut" for your fastener size. You will also need a gun that is similiar to a rivet gun but not the same to apply them. I found my gun at harbor freight and ordered the applicable fasteners off line.

I used a thing called well nuts to make attachment points with tie down eyes in an old jon boat, that is somewhat similar. I had not seen these before though. Thanks

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L-ik6TnWrGI Here is a quick video I found that explains it pretty well. Just another option for a situation where you can't put a wing nut or nut on the bottom side due to access reasons etc.

Used them a lot at the car dealership installing spoilers, roof racks, etc.

I had tapped and bolted my big tank directly to the floor of my boat and it keeps wallowing the threads out. Gonna drill out the holes and put these in it and see how it does.
