50 lb club has been attained.

Post by Shawn McNew » April 3rd, 2014, 6:35 pm

I figure I can at least show the pic even if I don't have time for a big write up right now. My buddy/customer/client caught the fish, although it was my turn to reel one in after his allllmost 40 lber on Sunday. It was a twist of fate I didn't get to reel it in, buuuut, I figure as a guide-figure I get to count it too! We can all share in the wealth right?

The stats:
Weight: 53 lbs (boga certified)
Length: 48"
Girth: 32"
Favorite food: live 18" skipjack

It has been 15 years in the making since I've been chasing the 50 on and off (in between small fish trips) and really helps to feel vindicated. Like a big monkey off my back. You start to wonder if you'll never catch a 50+ despite your best efforts with bait and time in all the right places. This time it came together.

Bob, the fish was released but floated up about 5 minutes later and despite our best efforts and cpr it didn't survive the encounter. It was mysteriously bleeding out its butthole pretty profusely. We were VERY gentle with it, and I laid it down gracefully on a premoistened towel when we had to set it down. I'd say the moral here is: Sometimes you have to kill the ones you love to get some satisfaction. :fish2: It's okay though, we filleted it and 50 mexicans will now have a great fish taco dinner. No actually it's at a taxidermist now and will be displayed at the bait shop alongside Todd Asher's TINY LITTLE 52 lber they caught last year.

Justification is the top end of the trophy fish are near the end of their life cycle anyway. Most of us have unintentionally killed some big beautiful fish, but I for one plan to keep on enjoying them as I near the end of my fishing cycle.

Hey, you tried to put her back and that is what really counts. Feeling vindicated has to be really nice after working so hard for that type of trophy. I'm looking forward to that feeling!!! I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I will gladly give up my left nut for the ability to have a bunch of those big skipjack swimming around in my tank this year. Damn sure wish those skipjack were in the waters around here.

Got the fiberglass replica at the shop yesterday. Post man had a hell of a time stuffing it into the mailbox! Took me a day to get the driftwood prepped and dried out. Mounted the fish on the wood today and got it squared away pretty good. It looks like a saltwater humpback striper despite me sending them 10 pictures of some decent looking fish that were fresh caught. Still looks good up there on the big cedar plank! It's true to size which is what matters most and doesn't look like it ate a capybara.

Skin mount was even less realistic and lumpy. Don't go to Cherokee Taxidermy in Canton.

The replica's colors and scale pattern look beautiful, but the shape and colors don't match the original fish. They had lots of photos of actual freshwater fish that I sent and not a one of them had a silver belly or silver fins. I don't get these taxidermy guys unless they just suck at copying colors that badly.

Fortner Taxidermy did my skin mount and it is perfect. Looks like it was just pulled from the lake. I wouldn't have any complaints about that mount though it is bad ass. You could just have them re airbrush the fins.

The mount looks great. I actually like the silver hue..kinda reminds me of a SPARTAN WARRIOR. "Molon Lave"

Remember that you are a fishing virtuoso and somewhat of a perfectionist. Any mount has imperfections, since no fish is perfect. I am inspired to ride my cycle down to the store to see it and visit you. Thanks for sharing this part of your life with so many.
