Post A Little Memory Lane...
Was going through some old pics on the external hard drive... found some stuff that was very memorable... thought I would share...
Enjoy!

These are from when I was stationed in Hawaii way back in 2009... Not deep sea fishing... Smallmouth bass on a small river that feeds Lake Wilson on Oahu. Kaukonahua stream was dammed in the 50's by Army generals, then stocked with catfish, smallmouth, largemouth, peacock bass, and tilapia...naturally the smallmouth went upstream, and flourished in the cold, clear water (I would catch 40 or so smallmouth a day ranging from 1-3lbs). So on my off days I would grab 2 light action spinning setups and pack up my rucksack with some food, thermos, small tackle box, and a 2 man tent, then hike 2 miles through a forest to a small creek that fed into Kaukonahua stream...First stop - net up a bunch of crawfish to use for bait. The smallies would hit anything because NOBODY FISHED FOR THEM!!!! I usually put the crawfish under a slipcork with a circle hook and they would get hammered!!! When I had the time I would hike and camp, eating a few of the smallmouth I caught (and usually some crawfish lol) for dinner. Water was pristine, and totally drinkable. No snakes...no briars...NO MOSQUITOS!!! I really miss it sometimes.

Lake Wilson is a very interesting fishery in that people would let "pets" go free in the lake... So there were also snakehead...and I shit you not - - I watched an arapaima eat a duck... Not telling what the hell was in there, but I loved the peacock bass. So... Peacock bass... One of my FAVORITE fish of all time... Imagine walking the bank, sightfishing for an unlimited number of 6-10lb hybrids!! Thats what these guys are like!! So my off days from May through September were often spent stalking the lake for these bruisers!! My biggest Peacock was just over 10 lbs, but 3-7 was common. I had many days where I caught 50+ fish. The secret was : 1) wear cleats so you dont slide in. 2) have good glasses. 3) a medium heavy setup rigged with a slow sinking rapala.

All you had to do is walk around the bank...look for white patches on rocks, trees, or other structure. Usually the mating pair would be right on the spot...This white spot is the bed, and the fish will FURIOUSLY defend it!! They aren't biting to eat - - they are going for the kill!!Flip the rapala on top of the nest and hold on...drag ripping, hook straightening action!!! In the heat of summer there would be so many pairs that you had to fight through the 3-4lbs to get to the bigger fish... What a problem to have... Ahhhh the good ole days. :)

Riley, that's some great fishing stories. I grew up there (for 23 years) and visit family every other year and never fished fresh water there. Us locals were always on the coast, fishing in the ocean. Lake Wilson has good fishing but is now over ran with homeless people according to a buddy of mine, he said they are ruining the lake and areas around it. The closest I got to freshwater fishing was the brackish, backwaters of Pearl Harbor, that was some good catching of Jacks and Mackerels there but it was getting over run by Talapia which we considered trash fish (now they are in the markets). We saw guys catch a few 12' Hammerheads on 130 lb test tuna gear from shore in the channel of the harbor. They would take a 3-5lb fish out on a raft and drop it off a 100 yds and wait.
Here's my son with a reef fish he caught off the beach last year. This type of fish is pretty but is considered to have poor edible qualities so it gets released to live another day.

Thanks Jamie,Ken, and Ezell!

Ken I recognize that young man... I believe I've seen a few YouTube videos of him putting a whoopin on fish around Juliette! How cool is that. :) Very cool you know where I am talking about. I got lucky and fished for the peacock bass on Kauai, too! Lotsa fun. Fished from the surf a few times...but not enough to keep me going back. Lol.

When I was there the homeless folks weren't an issue - but the lake was trashed. Fishing was still pretty good... That's also why I spent alot of time up in the mountains, though...Just drive to Wahaiwa and turn right on California Avenue...follow it all the way, then hike! I plan on going back before too long. :)

That's some really cool stuff. Smallies in Hawaii. Now I know everything! I haven't done anything cool like that. :poorguy:
