Striper from 1963. Pre lake stocking.

Post by Jimmy Arnold » August 12th, 2011, 11:56 pm

This is a picture of my Father and older Brother from the Union Recorder news paper in Milledgeville, GA. The fish were caught in the tailrace below Sinclair dam with home-made bucktails that my daddy made. He caught a couple of stripers a few years prior while float fishing for catfish using Tennessee wigglers. He adapted his catfish rig for stripers by using about a 6" slip-cork set at about 14 feet deep mostly while the generators were running (releases more water). The 14' depth was to the bottom bucktail of 5-6 bucktails tied at various distances up the line to have the shallowest one just beneath the surface. The reel was an old pfluger levelwind and he made a 12 foot rod out of a 14-15' cane-pole. The reel was on the pole with hose clamps, the eyes with electricians tape, and the tip with glue. He'd make a new rod about every 3 years. In later years he switched to a Zebco 888 reel and mostly live shad. He could catch fish in the tailrace when nobody else there could even get a bite. Brother Jonah lost interest in fishing a few years after this picture even before we had a clue what was wrong with him. When he decided to go to GA TECH we finally knew. Anyway, daddy instilled the obsession to fish in me and I'm forever grateful. Like him, I'd fish everyday if I could. Jimmy

I have caught striped fish out of those exact waters with not so dissimilar techniques (and when nobody else could! 8-) ). Good stuff, thanks for signing up!
