My new mascots

Post by Shawn McNew » February 9th, 2012, 11:58 pm

These are my shad hawks. They eat all the dead shad I toss out (almost). The male is now trained in the art of taking the dead ones off the surface of the bait tank. AWESOME! They are actually cooper's hawks. The male is sitting on the boat. I waited for 10 mins with the camera ready, hiding behind my f350, but he knew what I was up to. The male has been around for several months and the female recently showed up. I think because Mr. hawk has lots of fish to show her. They are getting very bold. They both hung around in the trees near the boat most of the day. I got some awesome video of me feeding them a couple of dead shad. The female dropped down on the ground and walked over to pick up a shad about 7' away from me. Very awesome.

Cool!

There used to a striper club for the Coosa basin and one of the members got started feeding owls near Brushy Branch. He had a dead shad on the deck of his boat that the owl swiped that started the encounters. From there he (and others) were able to hold up shad on plyers and the owl would fly down and grab it.

We did it a few times and you really had to watch out for owls that might be behind you. They come in silent!

One of the videos that Lee and Julie took.

Here's the videos I shot of them, no hand feeding yet, but I have a feeling that's coming:

Pretty Cool!

There are a couple of pairs of Bald Eagles on Lanier. Wonder if anyone could hand feed them? I am not sure I would want to even try, might loose a finger or two in the process.
